The format asks for players who can score at a high rate immediately, cover multiple positions, and hold their method under pressure. India has an unusually large group of young players who fit some version of that description, which is exactly why any 'best XI' argument runs forever without resolving.

It is also why selection is genuinely hard to predict. A squad is assembled around opposition, conditions, balance and the availability of senior players - a puzzle with many valid answers. Official squads are announced by the BCCI, and nothing published outside that is more than an opinion.

Abhishek Sharma is a left-handed opener who bats with clear scoring intent inside the field restrictions and offers left-arm spin as a secondary option, which matters in a format where a sixth bowling choice can decide a balance question. What the top-order brief really demands is not a big average but a willingness to take the powerplay on and accept the dismissals that come with it. Judging these players on average alone misses the point of the role entirely.

Tilak Varma is the left-hander most associated with the number three or four role - a batter expected to absorb a wicket cluster, keep the rate moving, and still be there at the back end. Ishan Kishan brings the wicketkeeping option alongside top or middle-order batting, which changes squad balance because it frees a specialist slot elsewhere.

Shivam Dube is the closest thing to a specialist finisher in the group, a power hitter against spin with a medium-pace bowling option attached. Fast bowlers like Mayank Yadav sit in the same 'young and much-discussed' bracket, though fitness and workload are the recurring themes there rather than batting form.

Selectors weigh things that are invisible from outside - fitness updates, workload management, net form, matchup planning against a specific opposition, and the long-term picture around a tournament cycle. A published XI ignores all of that and then gets treated as information when it circulates.
